Zumba Tips for the Beginner

Zumba is one of the easiest workouts to learn. You do not need any background in dance or fitness to get started. Even if you intend to teach, you may find that routines are quite easy to develop once you get the groove. Making the necessary preparations can greatly enhance your skill and talent, so you can easily move up the ranks in just a short span of time.

Getting Started

You may choose to watch a session or two first before joining, although most individuals can easily catch up even if they’ve seen and joined Zumba for the first time. It is advisable to wear loose and comfortable clothes that breathe and wick sweat off your skin. You can begin with a couple of layers on too, such as a sweatshirt or jacket. Later on, take off one or two layers as you warm up more. Wear the right kind of footwear with low treads. Cross trainers and aerobic dance shoes are ideal. These are the ones having the round pivot point on the ball of the foot. Running shoes are not very good since these have very strong traction.

The Right Mood

Join the Zumba class with a playful attitude. One of the main thrusts of the fitness program is to let you indulge and enjoy the music, so feel free to have fun and give out a yell once in a while as you feel the fat melt away. You do not need to master or follow the moves perfectly during your first few sessions. Feel the tunes and let loose. You can bring some friends to the class also, since Zumba is very enjoyable when done in big groups. Do not worry so much if you can’t learn the steps immediately. In most occasions, it takes about 2 to 3 classes before individuals really feel comfortable about the movements. Practice and consistency are the tools in letting your movements become more fluid over time.

Zumba Basics vs. Zumba Gold

What is the difference between a Zumba Basic class and a Zumba Gold class?

Zumba is a popular fitness program inspired by Latin dance. The word “Zumba” comes from a Colombian word that means to move fast and have fun, which is just how people describe the routine. Using upbeat Latin music together with cardiovascular exercise, Zumba is aerobic dancing that is lots of fun and easy to learn

ZUMBA Gold is a brand new fitness program for seniors.  It is a series of fitness programs specifically designed to take the exciting Latin and International dance rhythms in the original Zumba and bring them to the active older adult, the beginner participant, and other special populations that may need modifications for success.

Created to emphasize the basics, this explosive program is so easy to follow that everyone any age can do it!  This fun Latin inspired dance program includes Merengue, Salsa, Cha cha, Cumbia, Belly Dance and more.  These programs are guaranteed to provide the participant with a safe and effective total body workout!  Many of the moves have been modified for success and safety.  Some of the moves are also done 1/2 tempo so that everyone can follow.

The biggest difference is that Zumba Gold can be done in a chair for those who are in wheelchairs or who cannot stand for long periods of time.  This makes the program extra special because now people who would not be able to dance and do the Original Zumba program are able to join in on the fun

The History of Zumba

After his success is Colombia, Beto brought the class to the United States, and in 2001 he was approached by entrepreneurs Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion to create a global company based on his fitness philosophy. The three young entrepreneurs trademarked the word Zumba and set a goal to expand the brand all over the world.

Perlman and Aghion secured a deal with a large infomercial company to launch the concept nationwide resulting in the sale of hundreds of thousands of videos in the U.S. market. The overwhelming response created a demand for more Zumba instructors, so Zumba Fitness created an instructor training program to satisfy the growing demand. The program was an instant success. By September 2006, there were thousands of Zumba instructors worldwide.

Zumba Fitness teamed with the Kellogg Company to develop a fitness campaign for the Hispanic market. The Kellogg Company has since expanded the campaign to five additional countries. The Zumba program has been featured on millions of boxes of Kellogg’s Special K cereal around the world.

Zumba Fitness launched a successful infomercial campaign in Spanish for the U.S. Hispanic market and Latin America, increasing sales to millions of DVDs in over 30 countries.

The explosive demand for Zumba instructors across the nation and abroad spurred the creation of the Zumba Academy™, the educational division of Zumba Fitness. With top-notch leadership from a diversified team of professional choreographers, fitness experts and certified education specialists, the Zumba Academy has raised the bar and set a new standard in fitness programs, ensuring the highest level of integrity, quality and dedication to excellence, and exceeding industry standards.

Zumba Fitness and the Zumba Academy have aligned with AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America), ACE (American Council on Exercise), IDEA (the world’s largest association for fitness professionals), SCW Fitness Education, Can-Fit-Pro (International Trade Show and Conference in Canada), and many top national and international fitness facility chains and organizations. Instructors who complete workshops offered through the Zumba Academy are also eligible to receive continuing education credits (CECs) to satisfy recertification requirements from many of these associations.

The Zumba program launched internationally and currently spans six continents – North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Now, the entire world is partying to the exciting rhythms of the Zumba Fitness-Party™!

Zumba Fitness launched its third DVD collection with direct response industry leader, Guthy Renker. This time around, Zumba Fitness has added exciting surprises like the Zumba® Toning Sticks and the Zumba® LIVE! Workout

Zumba Workshop 101

To become a certified Zumba Instructor, you are required to complete a 1-2 full day workshop.  The class usually will begin at about 8 in the morning and run until 5 or 6pm.  The program is definately intense!  You have just a few hours to learn all the basic moves of the program and then to start doing practice drills and choreography.  After completing the training the new Zumba instructor receives a certificate which needs to be renewed yearly.

As a certified Zumba Instructor you are required to be a part of the Zumba Instructor Network or ZIN for short.  This ensures the success of the Zumba instructor as well as the class participants.  Being a ZIN member you have access to new music and choreography each month to keep your classes fresh and exciting.

A Zumba fitness instructor is required to continue with their training after the certification workshop.  This can be done by attending additional workshops, attending the Zumba Convention each summer or using their ZIN membership website.
